In the summer of 2023, Kyung Hee Global Virtual School was launched, offering free Korean studies courses through the university's online platform, e-Campus. Supported by the Korean government, Kyung Hee University's K-Culture Story Contents Research Institute is creating 50 high-quality online Korean studies courses over a five-year period, introducing 10 new courses annually.Kyung Hee Global Virtual School offers foreign students a convenient way to learn about Korean culture and acts as a gateway for fostering exchanges with Kyung Hee University. Between July 2023 and September 2024, over 6,000 students from 48 countries registered for KHU Global Virtual School. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Nagoya University’s Asian Satellite Campuses Institute (ASCI) offers a fully funded doctoral programme in English for midcareer government officials and researchers in 10 Asian countries. The programme combines distance education with local supervision, enhancing regional leadership and strengthening Japan-Asia relations. Students get tuition exemptions, annual airfare, accommodation and eight weeks of living expenses for studying in Japan. In 2023, ASCI expanded to include engineering. In 2024, it celebrated its first Afghan graduates and welcomed its first Bangladeshi student.The unique supervisory model allows students to pursue their degrees without taking leave from work. ASCI has enrolled 130 international students, mainly from government and academic institutions, and has facilitated local research and international collaborations. ASCI continues to thrive with financial support from various external sources. Ahmedabad University is a unique experiment in contemporary education where a brown-field university was transformed from a routine, above-average college hub into a leading player in the research and innovation ecosystem in Western India. Many things had to be fixed, reworked, introduced and experimented with before we arrived at a state of maturity.We began by consciously deciding to reduce our student intake and increase faculty appointments, incentivise and encourage faculty research, and introduced a tenure clock of six years, unprecedented in the country. We drastically cut down on the teaching load of faculty to give them more time for research and complemented it with generous research support. We introduced a means-blind policy to support students, and hired leading global architects to design our buildings in a way that is eco-friendly, sustainable and human centred. Surgical services are a prerequisite for full attainment of local and global health goals. Adverse and unintended results of surgery increase economic burden and without high-quality surgeons, more people suffer distress. The best way to improve surgical quality and performance is through the application of systems engineering combined with innovation, especially in training, that improves accessibility and affordability. Current teaching is limited at all levels.The Black Belt Academy of Surgical Skills (BBASS) was founded by Professor David O'Regan to explore parallels between surgery and martial arts. BBASS has an iterated progression of skills aligned through a "coloured belt" system: this pedagogical instruction approach, guidance and repetition transcends motor learning and eases the instructivist-constructivist tensions encouraging self-discovery.Shortcomings have been addressed using our novel online approach (with a following of 3,630 students in 121 countries) encouraging domestic, purposeful practice on low-fidelity models. This transformative and economic method of teaching could be applied globally.

Globally, scholars have reported complicated grief and prolonged grief disorder to be the prominent psychiatric sequelae to bereavement experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Recently, an international panel of thanatology educators jointly called for a grief literacy movement to help professionals identify grief more readily and be more proactive in supporting those going through the grieving process.In my medical humanities class, I seek to harness the untapped potential of an award-winning immersive video-game recommended in JAMA medical journal for raising undergraduate medical students’ awareness of the agonising anticipatory grief facing family care-givers of dying patients. I have designed an unconventional VR simulation activity to explore:<ul><li>how this medium can help medical students connect with families of terminally ill patients, and garner insight into the burden of care, grief and bereavement, and</li><li>how I could pair the immersive experience with design thinking-based debriefing to scale-up the impact on student learning</li></ul>

Most medical students regard pharmacology as an overwhelming subject due to the extensive information they must memorise. To make the learning process more enjoyable, Associate Professor Dr Pornpun Vivithanaporn created PharMatch, an online card game launched in 2021. The game features hand-drawn illustrations to enhance visual memory and is accessible on any device with internet connectivity. The game won the Innovative Teaching Award from Mahidol University in November 2023.This year, Professor Vivithanaporn created print-out PharMatch cards to create serious games in an escape room for 40 paramedic students. She also used these cards to play Clue and Bingo for 206 medical students. These interactive activities have proven to be more effective in boosting students' confidence in their pharmacology knowledge and fostering teamwork and communication compared with traditional classroom methods. Together, they developed a household-level waste segregation system under the National Food Waste Management Campaign, registered with the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Programme.Chulalongkorn University’s Department of Environmental Engineering played a key role in creating a method for reducing greenhouse gases by producing compost from organic waste. The project focuses on organic waste segregation at the source, which makes up 60% of total waste. A total of 7,773 local administrative organisations and 14 million households across 76 provinces have joined. Compost bins have reduced methane emissions, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. So far, over 2.5 million tons of food waste have been segregated, resulting in the certification of 366,394 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, the same as planting 30 million trees.

Pre-term birth, affecting 11.6% of pregnancies in Thailand, leads to significant neonatal complications and healthcare costs. Our research identified three key prevention methods: cervical length measurement; progesterone therapy; and cervical cerclage. However, barriers such as scepticism from healthcare providers and lack of free progesterone limited their adoption. In response, our research influenced national policy, leading to the integration of pre-term birth prevention guidelines into Thailand’s healthcare system in May 2023. Additionally, progesterone was added to the National List of Essential Medicines, ensuring free access for at-risk women. We also spearheaded training programmes for healthcare professionals and implemented a “sandbox model” at Siriraj Hospital to ensure routine cervical length screening.These efforts align with UN Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to Thailand’s mission to reduce neonatal mortality. Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT) developed 4 low-cost machines to help a community upcycle plastic bottles and create an income to help reduce poverty problems. Training and mentorship were provided to the community, which also includes elderly and disabled people. 100% of plastic bottles, including the bottle, label, lid and ring, were upcycled to brooms, bags, tablecloths, baskets, tree pots and furniture.With continual improvement since 2018, production efficiency has been improved by 95% and a patent granted. The products achieved “community product standards” and won a “Community Enterprise Award”. Approximately 135,000 plastic bottles were upcycled producing income of 1,700,000 Baht. More than 5,000 people from other communities were trained from this community.This project was a cooperation between 5 NGOs, 4 government organisations, state enterprise and a private company. An MOU was signed with a company to produce a continuous supply to give the community a sustainable income.

The SHIKSHA Initiative, launched in 2012, aimed to improve education in government primary schools in Uttar Pradesh. Soon, it became clear that parents could not engage with their children's education, highlighting a need for adult literacy. The SHIKSHA team researched and found that existing programmes took eight months to make adults literate. Recognising adults’ shorter attention spans, they developed SHIKSHA Plus to teach in just 90 days using digital versions of Nai_Kiran textbooks.Key activities include selecting blocks and villages, training volunteers and raising literacy awareness. Volunteers identify non-literate learners via the Drishti app and provide essential learning kits. A 90-day teaching plan with regular assessments ensures effective learning. The programme significantly increased literacy rates, with women's literacy rising from 4% to 80% and men's from 5% to 80%. The programme has made over 111,000 learners literate by FY2023-24, and also been extended to 16 jails, making 1,700 inmates literate. Community libraries offer continuing learning opportunities.

This industry-community alliance between a local farm, hotel, welfare centre, eco-hospitality foundation, food retailer and university is experimenting with eco-social agricultural formats to engage diverse, intergenerational populations in land-care practices.To sustain its regenerative farm operation, the Soil Trust developed the Growers Without Borders service-learning programme. In this programme, ethnic minority mothers, undergraduate design students, and Locavore families committed to weekly farm work in return for access to arable land, harvest, upskilling and companionship. This eco-social format allowed the implementation of soil-bound nutrient cycling of kitchen scraps from a downtown hotel that sponsored the operation.Through this intersectoral action, hotel staff, agriculturalists, volunteers and design students invested their time and resources towards the unifying purpose of promoting local soil health, fertiliser self-sufficiency, greenhouse gas reduction and quality food access to the underprivileged, thereby enacting concrete forms of urban/rural co-development in daily life.

Nowadays, Thai marine fishery resources, especially the Blue Swimming Crab (BSC), have become depleted due to high fishing pressure and ineffective management strategies. Based on needs assessment surveys and requests from stakeholders in the BSC fishery, particularly the fishermen themselves, Walailak University (WU) launched a research project called “Crab Bank” to improve BSC stock and fisheries in the two main shared aquatic ecosystems in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani provinces.After seven years of implementation (2018-24), the FIP has been upgraded to an A-level rating. Local fishermen increased their crab catches from 5 kg per boat per day to 15 kg per boat per day. This project has played a pivotal role in encouraging fishermen to recognise their stewardship of coastal resources by avoiding the capture of immature animals, refraining from using illegal fishing gear, and organising various sustainability-led activities, such as fish habitat creation and nursery ground protection.

Using a novel socio-institutional framework, the study employed a robust quantitative analysis of a nationally representative, large-scale dataset – the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) data.The research found that women with at least one male child were significantly more likely to undergo a hysterectomy, suggesting that patriarchal norms influence medical decision-making. The findings uncovered a significant “community prevalence effect” and raised concerns about the potential overuse of hysterectomy in private healthcare settings.This research provides crucial evidence for developing targeted and region-specific health policies addressing the multifaceted drivers of hysterectomy in India.

The Habibi Community Centre is a unique project built for the 7,000 internally displaced Yazidi persons who were subject to violent ethnic cleansing during the 2014-17 ISIS/ISIL war. It is located in Bersive 2 Camp in Kurdistan, Iraq. Initiated by Habibi International and HIS Foundation (funders, clients, operators), the centre was built as a research-by-design project with ABCD Collaborative (PolyU) and InSitu Project (PolyU), in collaboration with Vide Terra, MedEast and Catalytic Action between May 2020 and May 2023.The community hall utilised an earth-bag construction (superadobe), reducing costs while providing construction training for residents. Arranged around a courtyard, the centre provides treatment facilities, a community hall, co-designed play spaces and sanitary amenities. It caters for medical, dental and women’s needs, as well as childcare, surgical rehabilitation, prosthetics, physiotherapy, trauma counselling, education and language training. The centre has been recognised in design awards and is a dignified oasis for the community.

A lightweight engineered aggregate from polystyrene (PS) foam waste was formulated for use in construction applications. It is an upcycling strategy for waste management. The box cushion PS foam is crushed into large pieces and then ground into pellets by a mechanical grinding machine. The pelletised foam is coated with an epoxy adhesive and second coated with fly ash in the mixing chamber. The final double-coated foam pellets are then cured for at least 6 hours. The resulting lightweight aggregate material is used in various product design applications, particularly construction.Testing of the manufactured prototype lightweight concrete block demonstrated that the mechanical properties of the block were comparable to those of commercial products. One obvious benefits of the designed block is that no special type of cement is required for the construction process – normal cement is sufficient.

Riding on real-world big population data, our project aims to optimise long Covid treatment strategies. In collaboration with a Harvard team, our study revealed nirmatrelvir–ritonavir's extended benefits for treating long Covid in hospitalised and immuno-compromised patients, supporting an enhancement of current clinical guidelines for Covid-19 management. Traditional building management systems (BMS) operate on fixed schedules, which may not always meet real-time occupancy needs. NTU leverages existing wi-fi infrastructure and location data to estimate the number of occupants in lecture theatres and meeting rooms. These data are integrated into the BMS to adjust or switch off AC systems during periods of low occupancy, reducing energy usage and carbon emissions.With more than 40% of campus emissions coming from air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation, transitioning to demand-driven efficiency is crucial for NTU to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. This wi-fi-based solution eliminates the need for additional sensors, reducing maintenance costs and extending equipment lifespan. Using wi-fi data to estimate occupancy levels, also opens new potential benefits in optimising campus spaces and emergency response.
